The Little Mermaid

I don’t quite understand the logic behind sending a replica of a statue to be displayed at the World Expo in Shanghai, nor the reasoning for all those people who flocked to see this statue in a pavilion with not much else to see…. However, when you’re a tourist in Copenhagen why would you pass it? So for the sake of saying: “I’ve seen the mermaid in Denmark”, I walked up the Amaliegade, through a park and have a glimpse of this quiet beauty.
It was cold and drizzling, but there were quite a number of people wandering around the park. Some locals were running, but I think there were more tourists. The walk was not a short one, I passed by a church, lots of green and also see some gigantic smoke chimneys across the water… certainly not the walk with the best view. Just when I started to wonder where was the mermaid, I saw flash light kept going off from afar. That got to be the thrown of the mermaid.
I went up, took some pictures, but I really couldn’t get excited about this. I guess I’m just not a fan of the tale of this little mermaid, and I’m not too crazy about bronze statue. However, the fact that she had been amputated several times, is pretty fascinating.
…and the mermaid marked the end of my visit in Copenhagen!
Never understood why the head got stolen so many times?!
perhaps, it does worth a lot in the black market 😉
Mmm, you experienced the dull rain of Denmark then. Never been lucky in our visits either!
haha well, i had half day of sunshine there. which was better than i expected 🙂
The thing that surprised me about the Little Mermaid was how little she really is. Shouldn’t really be surprised, I know.
Right! I thought it would be a larger statue and placed further out in the water 🙂
When I was in Copenhagen they had a big sign with a web page address instead of the mermaid. The mermaid had taken a trip to China and you could look at it on the internet. It was the only disappointment I had in Denmark.
That sucks! although i must add that you didn’t miss much.
She was in China when I was there too, but there was a giant video screen in the water with a not very clear live feed from the expo showing her sitting there with people walking by. We passed on the opportunity to buy a souvenir from a guy in a truck.
Perhaps it was too cold, i didn’t see any guys selling souvenir. only lots of tourist waiting to take pictures 🙂 I wonder why don’t they put up a another replica here in Copenhagen when the mermaid was in China. after all, the one exhibited in China wasn’t the original anyway.
Thanks for stopping by!
I feel exactly the same way about the mermaid statue. And I wrote about it a couple of days ago to (under 2012: an earth odyssey). For me it suits Copenhagen though: you go there with high hopes and you end up a bit disappointed. For me definitely one of the least interesting European capitals.
Haha I didn’t have high expectation for Copenhagen, besides the seafood. So i enjoyed my brief 2 nights stay there. I really don’t think I could spend more time in that capital tho 😉 cheers.
